Tendai
Buddhism
The Tendai school of Mahayana
Buddhism had its origins asT'ien T'ai (Heavenly Terrace), named
after the mountain ranges where it was established as a Ch'an
or Zen school of esoteric Buddhism.
Because Tendai is an esoteric
school, it probes the mystery, not only of the Buddha's
teaching by a 'back to the bone' approach, but also the meaning
of life itself. Each individual is on a great journey which
only they can complete.
"The teacher may only point.
The student must do the walking"
The depth of Tendai Buddhism
is to be experienced through practice. There are no magical
formulas toTrue Awakening.
Reverend Jiryo is Australia's
first ordained Tendai priest. In addition to retaining
essential Tendai teachings and practices, he is also a senior
disciple of Tendai Lotus Teachings, a Tendai group of Deshi and
priests dedicated to advancing Tendai's philosophy and
teachings overseas in addition to taking to making more
eclectic use of the Buddha's Dharma.
