The Tendai school of Mahayana Buddhism had its origins asT'ien T'ai (Heavenly Terrace), named after the mountain ranges where it was established as a Ch'an or Zen school of esoteric Buddhism.
Because Tendai is an esoteric school, it probes the mystery, not only of the Buddha's teaching by a 'back to the bone' approach, but also the meaning of life itself. Each individual is on a great journey which only they can complete.
"The teacher may only point. The student must do the walking"
The depth of Tendai Buddhism is to be experienced through practice. There are no magical formulas toTrue Awakening.
